The display is in reverse format, which means the background is in black, and the alpha numeric characters are in silver and white. Adjusting the contrast in the Suunto hidden menu does help, in reality, still not as crystal clear as the typical black letter on bright background. No fault of Suunto, but simply the way the style is. The buttons are responsive and easy to press. To get around through the menus, the "Mode" button and the "View" button need to be pressed in several combination to get what you need. It may seem to be complicated initially, but once you understand the reasonable design, it is pretty easy to remember. Give yourself a few days to get used to it.
Positive: Really accurate ABC. I compare their readings with the actual ABC instruments. The precision is outstanding and beats the Casio Pathfinder in the dirt! The storm alarms responds to the atmosphere pressure change precisely as well. The electronic compass is awesome. After you set the course, the bearing indicator would show an arrow and directional text (left and right), to guide you to the correct course, which is a great feature. User installable batteries which is excellent to save lots of money as time goes on.
Problems: The directional rotation ring is hard to move. For those who have finger nails, you should use them, if you chew your finger nails, best of luck. The alarm is soft and hard to notice sometimes. A similar problem as the Pathfinder. I wish they can make it more louder. The wrist strap feels and looks cheap. The illuminator is a bit dim also.
Suggestions: This watch has earned lots of negative reps as a result of bad quality control in its manufacturer factory in China. It's been tons of complaints and reported problem. After doing some research, it seems that Suunto has finally resolved the hardware and software glitches. Whenever you buy this watch, ensure the serial number starts from "918xxxxxx" onward. My own is "944" and so far it's great. You should email the seller, to make sure they give you the latest version as mentioned above, then your brand new watch will not likely spend most of its life going back and forth in the shipping vans.
