The Benefits Of Using Natural Sea Sponges
Most of us today are becoming more and more aware of the chemical world we live in, and how these chemicals have found their way into the products we consume and use on a daily basis. It seems impossible to escape this chemical grip, when just about everything and I mean everything is produced with so many chemicals, some of which are really dangerous, such as Triclosan, and Formaldehyde. It seems like every day there are new stories in the news of research developed of chemical awareness in products such as food, hygiene, cosmetics, cloths, toys, and household cleaning agents to name a few. The most bothersome part of this to me is that not all these products are required by law to have listed every chemical that is in that product on the labeling.
Sadly we live in a day when it is very important to do some product research before using these products on yourself and or family. As mentioned before it does seem impossible to escape this chemical grip, but there are some really easy product switches we can consider to wean ourselves off of some of these chemical infested products. Some of the more common switches that I have mentioned in other articles are what we put on our skin, and what we use to clean our homes with. I have just recently discovered another natural product switch that I would like to share with you and that is the natural sea sponge.
In my most recent vacation trips to Florida I found a natural soap store, and beings my family has a natural soap company, I wanted to pop in and see what other soap makers are doing. I had noticed they had some of their soaps molded in these natural sea sponges which I thought was a really neat idea and wanted try the same back in New York. So I bought a few of these bars to test out. I was amazed of the quality of the sponge and how it felt. This led me to do some research on the sponges.
I found that over 90% of the world’s natural sea sponge’s come from Tarpon Springs Florida off the Gulf of Mexico. Which I thought was great that this large industry sits in our own backyard keeping local citizens employed vs. some high producing factory in some far off country. Here sea sponge divers dive and do crop rotations for natural sea sponges such as the sea wool sponge, yellow sponge and silk sponge. I mention they incorporate crop rotations in case you are worried about what man is doing to the coral reef. Divers will go down and cut a section of sponge from the ocean floor allowing the sponge to re grow within a few years time. The sponges grow back most often bigger and healthier than their original state. This procedure happens naturally also, as the tide and currents will pick up sponges and re grow in other locations.
You may be asking yourself the same questions I was; what are the major differences in natural sponges vs. synthetic sponges, and why should I use a natural sea sponge instead of what I am currently using? Well for one they last a lot longer and are much, much safer for you to use. They are much more durable and retain more water than a synthetic sponge. A sea wool sponge taken care of properly can last as long as 10 years and a yellow sponge as long as 4 years. Synthetic sponges will only last a week or so until they start falling apart and get all nasty with mildew and bacteria. Natural sea sponges actually have enzymes in them that inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria.
Another great reason for choosing natural sea sponges instead of synthetics sponges is that there are no harmful chemicals in natural sea sponges. It is all natural and safe to use on all skin, young, old, sensitive, rough, and also safe to use for general cleaning around the house. Just about all synthetic sponges have the chemical Triclosan in them which is classified by the EPA as a pesticide. You can throw away those nasty commercial bought sponges sitting at your sink and replace them with a long lasting, natural safe sea sponge. And if you have very sensitive skin or are just looking for something very mild to wash your child, infant our yourself with, I think there is no better combo than an unscented goats milk soap bar molded in a natural sea wool sponge, one of the most softest sponges and highly recommended for bathing babies. With this combo you know that all the ingredients are natural; with the soap bar consisting of pure essential oils, having a vegetable oil base, no synthetic coloring or fragrances, loaded with glycerin, and the sponge itself coming right from nature. I don’t know about you but I much rather put that on my baby than some chemical infested product. To learn more about these products click on my links.
The three sponges that I am using are the sea wool sponge, yellow sponge and silk sponge. The sea wool sponge I am using for washing/bathing and use this sponge to mold in our goat milk soap bars that we sell. This is the most popular sponge for bathing and home use. When this sponge is wet it feels silky and smooth and will clean like no other wash cloth or sponge can clean. When properly cared for this sponge can last as long as 10 years. The yellow sponges are great for bath and home use as well and are popular for painting , pottery, ceramics, arts and crafts, and properly cared for this sponge can last as long as 4 years. I use this sponge in a 5 inch size for my household cleaning. The silk sponge is a very fine grained soft and porous sponge that is great for small cleaning jobs. This sponge is also used often for cosmetics, great for areas on the face, and also arts and crafts, pottery and ceramics. I personally use this sponge at my kitchen sink; I find that a 3 inch silk sponge is a perfect size for cleaning out glass cups, and ceramic coffee mugs.
If you want a more abrasive sponge for exfoliating skin or scrubbing dirty dishes, I highly recommend the Loofa sponge, which does not come from the ocean. The Loofa, sponge is a gourd that you can grow in the garden. This is a tropical plant native to Africa and Asia and does require a long growing season for the gourd to fully mature to harvest for sponge use, typically about 4 months. To see my photos of the loofa sponge process click here. I have been growing my own loofa now for years and have found that it is very important especially here in NY where the growing season is short, to start seeds inside and then transplant to the garden. Also the longer you leave the gourd on the vine the better for sponge making. I will wait until the frost has completely killed the vine and the gourds turn a brownish color, and the skin easily cracks when you squeeze it. After that you can now easily peel off the outer skin and clean out all the seeds and substance inside. Let it air dry for a day and now you have yourself a nice loofa sponge. If you want to brighten the color of your sponge you can soak the sponge in warm water with a little bleach for about 5 minutes.
Well there you have it, I hope I have sparked some curiosity in you to go out and get yourself a natural sea sponge and give them try. This is just one of the many over looked natural products that we can incorporate back in to our busy lifestyles for healthier living. My hope is that as more and more of us are becoming informed, we share with others and choose not to let convenience and cost be the big decision makers in choosing the product that will influence our overall health and safety. That we would be better stewards to our bodies and the environment we live in. I like to view healthy living as preventative medicine. We have been provided so many natural resources to take care of our every need by our wonderful Creator, let us not overlook what has been freely given to us. As always I do hope you make that pure and simple choice.
