Camping ,Budget Rooms & Self-Catering Cottages South Coast,Kenya East Africa

For your safaris to South Coast in Kenya there are air safaris tour packages, road safaris tour packages and private air charter tour packages which include accommodation, meals, transport with English speaking driver/guide. For accommodation there variety of choices namely, camping, budget rooma and self-catering cottages.

Diani Beachalets 6.9km south. Great value ,welcoming and homely, this peaceful refuge i8s right on the beach and has a variety of accommodation, from simple, on self-contained two-bed bandas with shared showers and cooking area, to roomy self contained cottages with kitchen and veranda. The site is visited by duicker antelopes, bushbabies.colobus and Sykes monkeys, and baboons we have banda and cottages.

Diani Campsite 1.4km south. Once something of an institution when it was Dan Trenchs (Trench was the elderly character who opened up Diani Beach in 1960s), this site fell on hard times, but its new incarnation is a popular standby ,with small ,well-maintained self contained ,self-catering cottages, slightly overpriced ,but all with kitchens and nets, plus camping : cooking facilities available),safe parking, and the busy Winds bar-restaurant.

Diani Marine Village 3km south .A great –value dive base, and whether you're diving or not, the decent banda-style accommodation, with fans and nets (no self air conditioning) make it well worth considering with Bed and Breakfast plan.

Kijiji Cottages 600m north .The best cottages on Diani Beach, innovatively designed and extremely well kept, with a choice of different shapes and sizes, all spacious, comfortable, secluded and well-furnished .Sea-facing cottages cost more (the three storey Bonde is the finest of the lot, with a superb terrace). There's a pool, and regular visits by monkeys and bush babies. A daily cook/cleaner is included with each cottage.

Stilts 3km south, opposite Ali Barbour's Cave restaurant. Just over the road from the beach, but right in the bush, with non self contained bandas on stilts, well-shaded pitches for camping, a good bar-restaurant and plenty of wildlife. Solar lighting in rooms and no electric sockets-charge your batteries at the bar.

Tandoori Guesthouse 3.5km south, on the west side of the road, behind Tandoori Bay Restaurant .The cheapest rooms in Diani, and very reasonable for the price: clean, some of them pretty large, all with nets-three self contained, three non self contained.

Vindigo Cottages 700km south. Seven self-catering cottages in woodland, with pleasing rustic feel. The kitchens are fully equipped and the rooms are very private, if a little basic, with electricity and decent bathrooms .Some have lovely views over the beach through the trees.A cook can be hired on per daily basis.

Warandale Cottages 600m north. On the same plot as Kijiji, and sharing the pool, these six cottages are smaller and simpler, but still extremely pleasant, fresh and spacious. Three are sea-facing,others(cheaper) are set back among the trees, with the advantage of more likely bush baby and monkey sightings. A daily cook/cleaner is included with each cottage. Good discounts My-June & Sept-Nov.

Wayside Beach Apartments 1.4km south, between the main road and the defunct Trade Winds hotel. Urban –style, German-owned two –to six –bed self-catering apartments in a building around a good pool and spa, but not right on the beach.

Hotels North Of The Junction Diani

Diani Reef Beach Resort 1.5km.Built in the 1970s and revamped in 2005, complete with under-lobby aquarium, this is one of the largest hotels on the coast, on a steep stretch of beach, with three restaurants, five bars, and 143 rooms, all cool and comfortable, but with little to distinguish them but the size of their balconies. The pool feels too small for the number of guests, but facilities are good ,including all the watersports,a diving school, the Ace casino, Dunes Nightspot (9pm-late) and Maya spa Half-Board

Diani Palm Resort 2.4km north. Although on the landward side of the road, the beach is just 400m away, and this part-Swiss-managed hotel offers all the essentials, with less fuss and at far less expense than most of its neighbours. The 22 self contained rooms are fresh and clean (if a little basic), with nets, TV and fridge.Theres a reasonably priced bar-restaurant and a good-sized pool Bed & Breakfast basis.

Indian Ocean Beach Resort 3.4km.The northernmost property on Diani Beach (it shares its boundary with Kongo Mosque) opened in 1992, with-at the time-state-of-the -art, Lamu style rooms. It still manages to feel a little special, and is popular for weddings and honeymoons. The one hundred rooms have cute, alcove bathrooms, fridges, safes and tea-making kit, and upstairs rooms incorporate very pleasant balconies looking out across the baobab-studded gardens. The oceanfront rooms are worth the small supplement. On the down side, the pool is too shallow and rather exposed bed and breakfast is offered.

Leisure Lodge 1km.One of the earlier Diani hotels (1971) but slickly revamped, and in a striking location on low cliffs hollowed by bat-filled caves, above a fine, tree-shaded beach. Five pools soak up the guests from 170 rooms and there's a casino (9pm -3am), and an 18-hole, par 72, 6084-metre golf course. Standard rooms lack sea views, but come with air conditioning, nets and DSTV .PADI diving school, windsurfing school and tennis Half Board meal plan provided.

Leopard Beach 70m.Once stylish tired hotel set in lush gardens with ponds and waterfalls, friendly if inconsistent staff, a good atmosphere and generally decent food. Superior rooms and cottages have sea views, but overall the 158 rooms vary from very good to verging on unacceptable for this standard. It's a big place, and overpriced at peak season, especially with its one, modest pool. Steps lead down to the beach.PADI diving school Half Board meal plan.

Southern Palms Beach Resort 2.7km.Bright, welcoming package hotel, with a spring in its step. The average-sized rooms ,with screened windows (no nets),TV, fridge and safe are perhaps a bit blandly cosmopolitan(and top-floor rooms are a bit of climb),but the overall, fun approach, with two enormous ,80-metre,freeform pools, four restaurants, five bars and a kids club, make it ideal for families.PADI diving school("Diving the Crab"),windsurfing ,floodlit tennis courts ,squash, gym Half Board meal plan.

Hotels South Of The Junction Diani

Asha Cottages 2km.Cool,light,airy,family-run,boutique hotel, right by the beach, with just five rooms ,and water heated by solar panels.Pool, and excellent seafood meals .They capture rainwater, separate and recycle all waste, and donate a percentage of income to community projects Bed & Breakfast meal plan.

Baobab Beach Resort 5.9km.The 1970s Robinson Club Baobab is now an elegant and well-kept –all-inclusive, part of the big TUI group, located at the southern end of Diani Beach on a coral rock promontory. With 239 rooms, including the 2008 Maridadi wing (much bigger rooms) and the separate Kole Kole Resort (south of the promontory) it's a busy place, on a sizeable plot-though they have cleared much of the indigenous forest-with a reputation for good food. Clients can use all three parts of the resort."Diving the Crab" PADI diving school.

Diani Sea Lodge 3.3km .Large German-owned, slightly down-market, Mediterranean –style version of the jointly owned Diani Sea Resort. The rooms a let-down : despite the good-sized double beds, air condition and frame-fitted nets, most are small ,in bungalows set back in the gardens. Pool and children's pool, gym, tennis court, crazy golf, windsurfing and PADI diving school. Mainly German clientele.

Diani Sea Resort 1.9km.Built in 1991 and much more cheerful than its sister hotel, with good service, nice staff and plenty of things to do. Again, most guests are German, many on long stays. Great pool, gym, tennis and squash courts. Crazy golf, windsurfing and PADI diving school.

Flamboyant 2.8km.Large family house, adapted as a modest but comfortable hotel, sleeping twenty guests in a variety of a/c rooms with fans and nets.Theres a good pool, tennis and squash. Separate cottages-Baobab and Desert Rose-are also available.

Kinondo Kwetu 12km, on Kinondo beach. Far south of Diani Beach proper, Konondo Kwetu ("our Home at Kinondo") mixes Scandinavian cool and Kenyan warmth in a beguiling combination, with lots of African art, sumptuous fabrics and dark wood, catering for a maximum of 38 guests. The breeze-cooled rooms, none of which lock (or need to) have stylish ,bright interiors ; there's excellent cuisine : charming Swedish  hosts; and almost nobody on the beach(though note the beach is narrow, the reef far out and the lagoon shallow at low tide) .Free airport transfers, sauna, sports and non-motorized  watersports, plus a PADI diving school and riding stables.

LTI-Kaskazi Beach 300m.Well run and competitively priced, successfully balancing packages-tour prices with a friendly atmosphere. While the rooms are ready  for a refurb, the public areas are still stylish enough, decorated with Arabic motifs, white-tiled floors and tinkling fountains.Theres also the sad little ruined  seventeenth-century "Diani Mosque" in the garden ,which basically just an old wall.

Neptune Paradise Village 8.5km, on Galu Beach. Decent rooms("Paradise " are superior to "Village") in tightly packed rows of two-storey bandas(few with sea views) ,on a plot  that requires lengthy ,shades less walks and has been extended seawards to the point where there is no beach left at high tide. Reasonable facilities include two pools and a diving school. The Co-owned Neptune Palm Beach, 200m to the south, is more luxurious .Renovation to the "Paradise "rooms in 2009 should see improvements.

Papillion Lagoon Reef 5.5km.Middle-market, mid-sized mostly all-inclusive hotel, with 119 rooms and a good reputation for value-for-money stays, but inconsistent service and mediocre food.Rooms, of which eighteen have sea views, are better than adequate: spacious, comfortable, with a/c and fans, useful room safes (extra payment) and balconies .Free windsurfing and snorkeling for All guests, and free diving demos available in the pleasant pool.

Pinewood Village 10.8km, on Galu Beach. Well managed .Mediterranean-style resort hotel on a quite stretch of the beach south of the main Diani strip, all set in pretty gardens .Take an ordinary room and eat in the restaurant, or a suite and get the services of your own chef thrown in.58 rooms in cottages of two doubles upstairs and one suite downstairs, with great a/c, nets and safes.Theres a good gym and the popular Aqua land water sports centre down on the beach half-board services provided.

Shanti Holistic Health Retreat 6.4km.With just eight rooms, the most unusual establishment on Diani bills itself as a yoga and meditation health retreat and is just about far enough south of the busiest part of the beach to do so convincingly .The food is vegetarian and rates include yoga and meditation sessions, but therapies and massage treatments are extra.

The Sands At Nomad 4.8km.The most appealing hotel on Diani Beach is this boutique beach lodge of cool, well-designed rooms and cottages (though standards and prices vary greatly) tucked among baobabs close to the shore, with 37 rooms and suites, and very personal service.Theres a good beach bar and restaurant, the HQ of the "Diving the Crab" PADI diving school, 5m-deep pool (good for dive training), and a kite surfing school.

Water Lovers Ocean View 2.2km.Both friendly and trying to be eco-friendly ,with six cottages and a vila, largely powered by solar panels, this small, recently built hotel lies in a coconut grove more or less on the beach. The centerpiece is a small infinity pool above the sands. The Italian-slanted restaurant goes on for local produce and home cooking.
