Server Console Applications Are Diverse
A console server is a device that allows several computers to be connected to a network or the internet. Generally, a small box with several input ports; these components are produced by many manufactures in several formats. An incorporated server console switch enables manual control from a remote master computer. Commonly used for business applications, a console server allows a user to perform secure remote data management from an offsite location. Smaller applications including computer based home entertainment systems and classroom networks are also common.
The networks generally used by console servers include Unix Servers, Linux Servers, Windows Servers or any other device on the network with a console port. Because information is often passed over open channels, security is usually incorporated in any device. Strong encryption programs are applied so that information is only available to registered users. The various kinds of devices available are quite specific, depending on the situation requirements. Users install console servers in order to remotely control, monitor, or diagnose equipment over a network or the Internet.
A server console switch, or a KVM switch, short for Keyboard, Video, and Mouse, allows a dedicated computer to control one or more other devices remotely. In this way a single keyboard, monitor, and mouse controls several computers. Networks can include from two to dozens of computers, though usually only a limited number can be remotely controlled at any one time. An example application of this technology would be for a classroom teacher who wants to demonstrate something on a student's computer by controlling it from a master terminal at the head of the class. The switch enables the reverse to be possible as well: several monitors, keyboards, and mice can be connected to a single command computer. This set-up might be useful for a restaurant where staff can enter orders on any of several units, which are then sent to the main terminal.
Some devices are set using a switch or switches on the box itself, while others allow the use of keyboard commands to control the parameters of the connectivity. A server console switch is commonly used in data centers were several servers are racked together and connected through the switch to a single keyboard. Increasingly, home use applications include connecting several portable devices to a central keyboard, monitor, and mouse.
Because the capabilities and applications for a server console are so diverse, server consoles come in many configurations. The specifics will depend on the needs of the user. Huge industrial models can accommodate hundreds of computers while specific retail versions are built for connecting two or three terminals. As technology continually diversifies, these devices adapt and other computer components develop overlapping capabilities. Recently several USB devices incorporate some of the capabilities of a server console. It is important to determine the situation requirements before buying a device.
